There are many types of floor finishes and coatings that can be applied to timber floors. At Floorshow, we take the time to recommend the best products to suit your Melbourne home or business, as well as your needs and your lifestyle. We also carry a comprehensive sample collection, helping you to select one of the following floor polishing types:
Oil-Based FinishesFinishes containing oil-based alkyds with the addition of urethanes provide a reasonably good abrasion resistance. A strong odour is prevalent during application, but this dispels as the floor dries. These finishes provide a subdued, satin to semi-gloss appearance. However, it’s important to keep in mind that oil-based coatings “yellow” with time and require greater maintenance, especially in high-traffic areas. |

Polyurethane FinishesSolvent-based polyurethanes such as Feast Watson Maxithane or Polycure Durapol (moisture-cured and two-component) provide a very durable finish. These are fantastic options for timber floor polishing, as they greatly reduce the level of routine maintenance required. They also provide some of the most durable finishes available today, with gloss levels from matte through to a very high gloss. A strong odour is prevalent during application but dispels as the finish dries. Due to their high strength and generally limited flexibility, edge bonding of boards can occur when acclimatisation is incomplete. |

Water Based FinishesThe latest high-quality water-based coatings, such as Bona Traffic HD, are not only non-toxic but offer superior durability. They make a fantastic alternative to oil-based finishes as water-based coatings do not yellow with age. In addition, these finishes are available in various types, including ultra-matte and gloss. |

Hard WaxProducts like Treatex Hardwax Oil provide a superb natural look to the timber. They let the timber “breathe”, allowing for “movement” to occur. Hard wax will not edge bond and there is minimal odour during and after the application. Hard wax also will not discolour, crack, flake or peel. It’s available in matte, lustre, satin and gloss. |

Penetrating OilArguably, an oil-finished floor can provide the most natural look of any wood floor finish. An oil finish also tends to make some floors look “old,” as if they had been installed for a very long time, making it a popular choice for floorboard polishing. Prior to the use of various urethane and similar finishes, oil was the traditional finish of choice. In Europe, where this traditional natural look has been in demand for quite some time, it accounts for almost a third of all wood floor finishes. Oil finished floors are far less susceptible to scratches than those with a urethane finish as the oil actually penetrates and becomes a part of the surface of the wood floor. As it not only penetrates but also hardens, products such as Loba Impact Oil provide very good protection, are easy to maintain, and if done properly will prevent a floorboard or timber floor from ever having to be sanded. |
